Established as The Skamokawa Eagle in 1891
Misty Rivers Plantation will host two lure coursing events this month, at 117 Cross Dike Road on Puget Island.
In these events the dogs run in groups of two or three, chasing an artificial bunny around a random 1000 yard course to determine the best runner in each breed, after which the winners compete for the best in field award. Both of these events are sponsored by the Willamette Valley Basenji Club, sanctioned by the AKC and judged by AKC qualified judges.
The first event is this weekend, May 9 and 10, and will be open only to AKC registered sight hounds. After registration and roll call, races usually commence around 9 a.m. and continue until all hounds have run, usually to late afternoon, both days.
The second event will be held May 23 and 24 and will include a category AKC has confusingly named CATS for Coursing Aptitude Trials, which is open to all breeds, mixed breeds and unregistered dogs. Dogs can be signed up in advance or on the spot. Call Judy Brawn at 360-562-1925 for more information.
The public is welcome to attend and dogs are welcome as spectators, but should be well leashed since many are tempted to join the chase. Visitors may park on the grass along the driveway. There is limited handicapped parking in back near the coursing field, and restrooms are available.
