Lady Mules sweep Toledo
Last week in Toledo, the Wahkiakum Mule baseball team suffered two losses to the Indians while the softball team won both of their games.
Terris Record pitched all eight innings in the first game of the double header and took the loss, 2-3. He struck out six and had one earned run. On offense, Joey Moore was 2-4 with two singles, Luke Brown went 3-4 with two singles and an RBI, Zac Brown was 1-2 with a single and an RBI and Brandon Budd went 2-4 with two singles.
The Mules lost their second game 0-6. Z. Brown took the loss, pitching five innings and striking four out. James Anderson provided relief in the final inning. L. Brown was 1-3 from the plate, as was Record and Budd. Each hit a single.
“The boys played hard,” Coach Marc Niemeyer said. “They showed some real solid defense at times. Today we didn’t swing it and that’s baseball.”
The Lady Mules won their first game against Toledo 5-2. Tori Wegdahl pitched all seven innings and struck out four.
“Tori pitched really well,” Assistant Coach Stacey Wegdahl said. “She was really consistent.”
Sam Boyce went 2-4 at bat with a double and an RBI. T. Wegdahl went 2-2, Mackenzie Anderson was 2-3 with an RBI and Megan Thompson went 1-3 with an RBI.
“Everybody played,” Stacey Wegdahl said, “they all contributed positively, they all showed effort. It was a lot of fun.”
The Lady Mules won game two, 18-14. Marissa Baker was the starting pitcher. She pitched two innings and was relieved by T. Wegdahl when Toledo tied the game 6-6 in the third inning.
T. Wegdahl went 3-4 at bat in game two. She hit a home run and two doubles. She also had four RBIs. Boyce was 5-5 with one home run, two doubles and seven RBIs. Mackenzie Anderson was 2-4 with a double, Megan Thompson was 2-2 with two RBIs, Peyton Souvenir was 2-4 with a double, Kennedi LaBerge went 3-5 and Maddy Mace was 2-4 with an RBI.
“Defensively,” Stacey Wegdahl said, “Kennedi LaBerge at second base, Mackenzie Anderson in center field and Maddy Mace at short stop stood out. They all had a good day.”
The Lady Mules only committed three errors in each game.
For the first time in years, the Lady Mules will be going to District. Their games against Morton/White Pass yesterday (Wednesday) determined whether they would head into district in sixth, seventh or eighth place according to S. Wegdahl.
