Mules winless in a rough week

Wahkiakum Mule baseball and softball teams returned to play after spring break with a mixed bag of wins and losses.

On Saturday, April 11, the Mules baseball team beat the Onalaska Loggers in two, 12-2 and 17-2.

Zac Brown pitched all five innings of the first game, striking out nine with one earned run. Offensively, he was 4-4 at the plate with two doubles and three RBIs.

At bat, catcher Joey Moore was 1-3 with a single, Luke Brown was 2-3 with an RBI, Terris Record was 3-3 with two doubles and 5 RBIs. Brandon Budd also went 3-3 and drove in three runs.

Terris Record pitched three innings of the second game. He struck out five and got the win. Z. Brown pitched the final two innings and struck out three.

At bat, Moore went 2-4 and drove in two runs. Z. Brown hit a triple and was 2-3 with three RBIs. Record was 2-2 with three RBIs and a double. Cody Terpsma went 1-4 and drove in three runs.

"I really liked the aggressiveness we had at the plate," Coach Marc Niemeyer said. "We had several errors that need to be cleaned up but the conditions were tough."

The same day, the Lady Mules traveled to Seattle to play Onalaska at the University of Washington. They also played at home against Onalaska on Tuesday, April 14. The Eagle did not receive a report for either game.

On April 15, both teams traveled to Napavine. The baseball team lost two, 7-0 and 13-3.

In game one, Z. Brown was the starting pitcher. He faced 20 batters and struck out three, finishing with two earned runs. Anderson stepped in after three innings and struck out one.

Ferguson was 1-3 at bat and Colton Mace went 1-2.

Record pitched most of the first three innings, followed by Anderson, Z. Brown and L. Brown.

Z. Brown went 1-3 at bat. Moore had two stolen bases.

"Napavine swings it real well," Niemeyer said. "They capitalized on every mistake. In order to compete versus top teams you cannot make the mistakes we made tonight. We will get back after it and keep working hard."

The Eagle did not receive a report about the softball game.

On Monday, baseball and softball teams traveled to Cathlamet to face the Mules.

The Mules baseball team lost two, 12-2 and 7-4.

Z. Brown was 2-3 at bat with a double. Record went 1-3 and drove in two runners.

Pitcher Z. Brown took the loss, pitching five innings, striking out six and finishing with four earned runs. His brother L. Brown, provided relief, pitching one inning. He struck out two and had three earned runs.

The second game was closer with some spirited play and words from Moore. He was 1-3 at bat. L. Brown was 1-3 with one RBI. Z. Brown was 2-4 with a double and and an RBI. Record was 1-4, Budd was 2-3, Ferguson went 1-2 and despite being 0-3 at bat, Casey Wilson got an RBI.

Anderson pitched five innings, striking out six batters. Record pitched two and struck out two.

"If we are going to compete with the top teams," Niemeyer said, "we have to execute better. We need to stop leaving the door open and play with more confidence."

On the other side of campus, the Lady Mules faced a tough Pe Ell team, losing two.

The starting pitcher for the first game was Tori Wegdahl. Offensively, Maddy Mace was 1-2 at bat, Morgan Elliott went 1-2, Sam Boyce went 2-2 with two home runs and Tori Wegdahl was 1-2.

The Lady Mules lost the second game 17-2. Marissa Baker was the starting pitcher.

Boyce went 1-1 at bat, as did Kennedi LaBerge, MacKenzie Anderson and Jessica Thomas, who hit a double.

"Pe Ell did a great job hitting the ball," Coach Rob Garrett said. "Their starting hitter went 5-5. Defensively we need to figure out where the ball goes before the play. We are working on it in practice."

On Friday, both teams travel to Toledo for play. On April 28, they host Morton/White Pass in their final regular season home games.
