Port District 1 commission checking dredging bids

Shannon Gildea of the Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce was introduced at April’s Wahkiakum Port District 1 meeting last Thursday before the commissioner’s tackled the day’s issues.

Four bids for the Port’s dredging project were submitted, and Port Manager Jackie Lea said that she had been reading through them, asking questions and checking references.

“I want to get the best fit for us,” Lea said.

Lea also mentioned that she had spoken with Corky Wilson, a commissioner for the Port of Chinook, and he had showed some interest in renting a dredge that Chinook had recently purchased and repaired. Lea will follow up.

Work continues around the marina. Security cameras have been installed, and contractor James Trott was expected to begin relocating the RV dump site on Monday after the busy springer season.

Commissioner Bob Kizziar talked about making important connections and finding grants, mentioning a Boating Infrastructure Grant that could be used to build upland bathrooms.

“It’s due May 15,” Kizziar said, “so it would be hard to apply now. It is for infrastructure to improve the hospitality of transient boats 26 feet and over, so that Washington remains a boating destination.”

“I hope to keep looking for grants,” he continued. “There are varied opportunities besides restrooms, including the idea of increasing our dockage down towards Elochoman Slough.

“I’m excited about the possibilities for the marina and the future.”

The commissioners voted to approve travel for Bob Kizziar to attend the Washington Public Ports Association Spring Meeting in Spokane in May.

Port 1 meetings are held in the Elochoman Marina office at 5:30 on the second Thursday of the month.
