Wahkiakum High School track and field athletes began competition last week with a meet on Thursday in Onalaska and a trip to Centralia on Saturday for the Lewis County Invitational.
On Thursday at the 2B meet in Onalaska, the Mules competed against five other teams including Adna, Mossyrock, Onalaska, Pe Ell and a 1B team, Firm Foundation Christian School out of Battle Ground. The Mules boys team took sixth place in boys competition, scoring 19 points and the girls placed third in girls competition, scoring 117 points.
Junior Nevan Bingham placed seventh in the 100m with a time of 12.09. He competed against 22 other runners, and the winner posted a time of 11.28. Bingham also placed seventh out of 19 in the 200m with a time of 25.50.
Junior Thong Phan place 12th out of 13 runners in the 1600m race with a time of 7:01.08 and sophomore Kai Yuan Chen was eighth out of eight in the 3200m with a time of 17:05.18.
The relay team of Thong Phan, Kai Yuan Chen, Ethan Cothren and Bingham took second place in the 4x400 with a time of 4:34.06.
Senior Ethan Cothren placed third in the shot put against 29 competitors, with a throw of 35-11.00. The winner finished with a distance of 42-06.00.
For the girls, junior Grace Peacock took third in both the 100m and the 200m races, finishing with a time of 14.09 and 29.14 respectively. The winner of the 100m ran a 12.42 and the winner of the 200m finished in 25.94.
Sophomore Cheyenne Barton and freshman Aly Kirzy competed in the 400m. Barton placed second with a time of 1:09.99, 10 seconds behind the winner. Kirzy took sixth place with a time of 1:22.34. Kirzy also ran the 800m and the 3200m and taking seventh with a time of 3:29.64 and third with a time of 15:45.45 respectively.
Senior Shelbie Abbot ran the 1600m, the 100m hurdles and the 300m hurdles. She finished sixth out of 10 in the 1600m with a time of 7:49.88. In the hurdles events, she took fourth with a time of 20.14 and third with a time of 1:04.99, respectively.
The 4x100 relay team of Shona Heywood, Gracie Thomas, Kirzy and Barton took second place with a time of 57.71. The 4x200 relay team of Shona Heywood, Rory Heywood, Thomas and Barton took first place with a time of 1:58.79. The 4x400 relay team of Barton, Thomas, Shona Heywood and Peacock finished first with a time of 4:40.43.
Sophomore Tarah Wisner beat out 21 other competitors to take first place in the shot put with a throw of 28-03.00. Thomas took eighth place with a throw of 22-00.00. Wisner placed second in the discus with a throw of 65-07.00, two feet behind the winner. Freshman Ayesha Ahmed tied for 10th place with 49-08 and junior Bryanna Peek took 12th place with a throw of 48-05. Peacock placed fifth in the javelin against 16 other throwers. She threw for a distance of 55-01, and was followed closely by Shona Heywood, who threw for 48-07 and took sixth place.
Rory Heywood competed in the high jump, long jump and triple jump. She took second place in high jump, clearing 4-04.00, fifth in the long jump with a distance of 12-06.00 and third in the triple jump with a distance of 25-08.50.
On Saturday, the team traveled to Tiger Stadium in Centralia for the Lewis County Invitational to compete against 13 other teams from around western Washington.
Bingham took 12th place out of 58 competitors in the 100m with a time of 12.29, finishing one second behind the winner.
Kai Yuan Chen improved his time in the 3200m and finished in 10th place with a time of 16:33.41.
The 4x400 relay team of Bingham, Cothren, Thong Phan and Kai Yuan Chen improved their time, finishing in 4:32.95 and taking ninth place.
Bingham took 12th place out of 45 in the long jump with a distance of 17-9.00.
In girls competition, Barton improved her time in the 400m, finishing in 1:08 and taking first place. Senior Bruna Rocha took fourth place with a time of 1:28.12.
Kirzy improved her time in the 800m, taking 11th place and finishing in 3:10.31 and senior Sandy Gros took 12th with a time of 3:19.00. Kirzy also took fourth in the 3200m with a time of 16:13.71.
Abbot improved her times in the 100m hurdles and 300m hurdles. She took sixth in the shorter race with a time of 19.88, three seconds behind the winner. She placed fifth in the second race with a time of 1:01.77.
The relay team of Thomas, Barton, Peacock and Shona Heywood placed first in the 4x100 with a time of 56.02, improving their time. The team also took fourth in the 4x400 with a time of 4:57.34.
Wisner placed fourth out of 35 competitors in the shot put with a throw of 28-9.50, six inches farther than in the meet on Thursday. She also took 11th in the discus with a throw of 69-5, an improvement of four feet.
Rory Heywood placed fifth in the high jump, clearing 4-2. She took eighth in the long jump with a distance of 11-10 and third in the triple jump with a distance of 27-10, going two feet further than her last meet.
The Wahkiakum Mules will have their only home meet today (Thursday). They will be joined by Firm Foundation Christian School, Adna and Onalaska.
