Wahkiakum Mule Golf

The Wahkiakum Mule golf team opened their 2015 season last week short handed but made the most of it. Senior Elliot Haney shot a 38 to tie Ilwaco's Kenneth Sheldon for medalist in a match with former 1A power house golf programs Life Christian Academy, 167 team score, and Ilwaco, 178.

Haney led by one stroke going into the last hole but blew a nine iron over the green from 145 yards, winding up with an unlikely bogey that resulted in the draw.

Freshman Bryce Good opened his career with a drive right down the middle, showing he can swing it with the veterans; however, he had a host of nervous errors that ballooned his score to 57.

The Mules hosted Willapa Harbor on Monday and travel to Ilwaco today (Thursday).

Last year's district champion senior Nicholas Betrozoff from Willapa Valley was a little rusty from wrestling during the winter; however, he shot a four over par 49 at Skyline Golf Course on Monday to best Elliot Haney of Wahkiakum by two strokes, 42.

Haney had a little putting trouble adjusting to the freshly mowed greens but hit the ball well. Freshman Bryce Good needed a par on the last hole to secure third place with a 47, beating a pair of seniors from the Harbor Schools; how exciting.

The four schools failed to field a four-man team so today's event was an individual event.
