Established as The Skamokawa Eagle in 1891
To The Eagle:
For those of you who are planning events, please remember that you need at least two advance announcements in The Eagle prior to your event (not the day of the event) as having something announced on the day you're going to have it, like on a Thursday, really makes no sense.
There are many of us who get our paper in the mail, so if your event happens to be held in the morning hours, we don't even receive the paper until the event is over. Not to mention, people have to plan their days, or take some time off and so events/meetings/forums held for the public during the week and during the daytime, are difficult to attend in the first place, but with no warning, just impossible.
Take a look around town at all the people who are working, including our school employees. If you have an event during most peoples' working hours, how do you expect to get an audience? If you add that along with no advanced notice, well, it's not likely that many will be able to show up.
Some folks don't subscribe to The Eagle, and they just pick one up when they go downtown in the afternoon, or the next day, so if that's your first notice, well, they are definitely not going to know anything about your event.
So, if you truly want to get your message to the masses, be sure to give plenty of notice to your community so they have a chance to attend. In an area where there are multiple things going on, you just can't publicize enough, or early enough. Between posters (not flyers) and social media like emails, facebook, and twitter, and plenty of advanced publicity in the paper, you are more apt to have a good turn out. For bigger events, radio announcements are a great way to reach a lot of people and other bigger newspapers as well.
Last but not least, "talk it up" as we all have friends and neighbors and co-workers and they can help in getting the word out there. It all takes work, but if you're going to all the trouble to have an event, be sure you take the time and effort to ramp up your publicity skills so you can have a great turn out!
