Mules post wins over visiting Naselle teams

On Tuesday, the Wahkiakum Mule baseball and softball teams met long time rivals Naselle in opening day play at home.

The Mule baseball team who had been trailing early on, beat the Comets 4-3 in seven innings.

Freshman Zach Brown pitched the first three innings, striking out six, and eighth grader James Anderson pitched the final four, striking out eight.

Hank Ferguson went 2-2 at bat and and drove in two runs. Brown drove in the other two runs and was 1-2 at bat. Colton Mace went 1-2, Seth Kuljis got a hit his one time at bat, Casey Wilson was 1-3 and Cody Terpsma went 1-3.

"The team showed great composure being down three after three innings but we battled back," said Coach Marc Niemeyer. "The kids had a lot of fun and showed a lot of energy which is a great sign of leadership."

The Mule softball team won their game easily, 22-0. The 10 run rule ended the game after five innings.

Pitcher Tori Wegdahl had 10 strikeouts and only gave up one hit.

The Mules had 19 hits. Maddy Mace was 4-4 and drove in two runs. Wegdahl went 2-3 and hit a double. Kennedi LaBerge was 2-2. She had a double and two runs batted in (RBIs). Marissa Baker was 2-3 and drove in three runs. Morgan Elliott was 2-4, with one RBI. Catcher Sam Boyce went 4-4, and drove in six runs, including her first grand slam.

The baseball team plays Mossyrock at home on Saturday, March 21 at noon.

Both teams will travel to Naselle next Tuesday, March 24.
