Mary Katrina Johanne Jacobson, 92, passed to our God's Heavenly home on March 12, 2015. She was born in Vega, Norway, February 17, 1923 to Hilda and August Wegdahl. Mary traveled to the United States in 1929 with her mother and two siblings, Robert and Solbjorg (Sally) Wegdahl. Mary and her family settled on Puget Island. She attended Puget Island Grade School and Wahkiakum High School. Mary and Wilbur Jacobson were married on June 1, 1941, and raised five children in Cathlamet.
Mary is survived by four daughters, Gwen Gorley (Jack), Cathy Jacobson, Doreen Parker, Jill Mcpherson (John), one son, Dale Jacobson, 13 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, a brother, Robert Wegdahl, a special cousin, Gladys Spooner, and many more nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mary and Wilbur were married for 59 years. Wilbur passed away in 2000. They had a wonderful busy life together. Mary loved to sing and sang with Wilbur's band kept the band active when he was drafted into the navy during the war. Mary was a wonderful mother and homemaker, loved sewing, gardening and clam digging. She was a restaurant hostess for many years, very active in Cathlamet Woman's Club, and club president as a 50 year member. She was also a member of Sons of Norway and Our Saviour's Lutheran Church.
Mary was very proud of her Norwegian heritage and she spoke fluent Norwegian even after learning English at six years old. Her love of cooking and baking became well known in Cathlamet and she taught some classes. Mary was also an excellent Norwegian pastry maker, teacher all of her daughters how to bake.
A celebration of her life will be held at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church on Puget Island, WA on Saturday, March 21 at 1 p.m. with internment at Greenwood Cemetery. A visitation will be held at Dowling Funeral Home, 10:30-11:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Alzheimers Foundation of America, American Heart Association or memorial of their choice. Dowling Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
