Down River Dispatches

It’s official, in my mind: Spring is here. I just found my first trillium blooming next to our driveway. Now it’s time to head into the woods and see if I can find the hundreds of trilliums that I was lucky enough to see last year. This year I will have my camera handy, so I can share.

Board members include Trudy Fredrickson, Tim Virkkala, Amber Davis, Dee Nikkila, Shonda Ware and PJ Katims. The price of the ticket entitles you to one glass of wine with your meal which includes spaghetti with meatballs, salad, bread and dessert.

Our guest chef is once again, Nick Nickolas from Tacoma. Nick has volunteered to cook this meal since its inception three years ago, and will celebrate his 90th birthday with family and friends this weekend. He is Penny Gregory’s dad, and uses his own special recipe for this meal. Won’t you join us for a delicious dinner, and wish a belated Happy Birthday to a delightful gentleman? The GRVC board members would like to thank you publicly for your generosity in coming here to help raise funding for the center and park.

For a special treat, we will have live music performed by Jerry and Becky Ledtke and the Wahkiakum Vibes from Skamokawa. This is a great group with music from the heart and includes many original songs written by members of the band. I like to think of it as “real, true to life music.”

The Second Annual Community In-Door Super Sale is a fundraising event for the Grays River Valley Center at Johnson Park in Rosburg, being held on March 28. The Center offers many free resources for the community including a free to the public library/computer lab, an exercise room, a free paperback exchange, a gym that is maintained for area school use and aerobics, sewing classes, free Friday Night Movies each week, and the newly established West End Food Pantry, which will be open for tours and information the day of the Sale. Contributions of non-perishables will be welcomed on sale day and at any other time during their open hours. For more information on center activities call 360-465-2960.

Hamburgers, hot dogs and beverages, prepared by one of our favorite resident chefs, Steve Ramsay at the Grays River Valley Center, will be available for purchase, as well as baked goods provided by the Grays River United Methodist Church Friendship Circle. The sale hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. More than 45 sellers are signed up this year, along with an outdoor moving sale. No matter what the weather, you can shop without getting wet as the event will take place in the gym and the halls of the old Rosburg School. The sale event will feature many different items offered by community and area participants: antiques or vintage items, collectibles, crafts, new and used or repurposed items, tools, and much more. Don’t forget the collection box for all glasses, lenses and frames, and hearing aids, in the library at Johnson Park. These items are picked up periodically and refurbished for distribution locally and overseas. This program is sponsored by the Lions Club. For more info please call 360 795-3337.

If you are looking for a group that dedicates itself to healthier living and lifestyle, you may want to team up with a great group that has been around for quite some time. The local TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) group meets each week in the meeting room of the Grays River Valley Center at Johnson Park on Thursdays at 2 p.m.

The Free Friday Night Movie for this week is a horror tale that is set to take place in Romania during the Turkish invasion as Vlad goes to the greatest of lengths to fight for his homeland -- even if it means selling his soul and becoming forever doomed as a creature of the night. Rated PG-13.

Concessions are also available with popcorn, candy and soda for sale at reasonable prices. The show starts at 7 p.m.
