Mules take second in state basketball tournament

The Wahkiakum Mules girls basketball team met the number one ranked Okanogan Bulldogs (26-0) on Saturday in the State 2B Championship game at the Spokane Arena and lost, 59-52.

The Bulldogs set the pace with three quick three pointers to start the game and though the Mules fought hard to stay in the game, they were never able to get hot offensively and trailed Okanogan for most of the 32 minutes.

In the final two minutes of the game the Okanogan coach got comfortable and pulled out his starters, only to put them right back in when Sam Boyce hit a three pointer.

Several Mule players found themselves in foul trouble with Tori Wegdahl eventually fouling out in the fourth quarter. Kaylee Bryant, who was averaging 15 points a game at state, was quieted when her fourth foul came early in the third and she went to the bench. Baylee Olsen and Grace Peacock ended the game with four fouls apiece.

Peyton Souvenir led the team with 15 points, shooting seven for seven from the free throw line. She also had seven rebounds, five assists and two steals. Sam Boyce scored 11 points and had four rebounds and three steals. Olsen added 10 points, eight rebounds, two assists and two steals. Wegdahl had seven points, two rebounds, one assist and three steals. Maddie Mace, Peacock and Bryant scored three points each. Mace pulled down two rebounds and Bryant had five and Peacock grabbed four. Jessica Thomas had one rebound.

The Mules shot 23 percent from the floor and 78 percent from the free throw line.
