My Plate tasting day Friday

According to Suzie Whalen, nutrition educator for WSU/Wahkiakum County Extension, the second My Plate tasting day at Wahkiakum grade/middle school will be held tomorrow (Friday.)

This month’s section is dairy. The students have a very dairy friendly menu, and this month they had special yogurt parfaits for breakfast on Wednesday mornings, thanks to the Parent Teacher Organization. The lunches they have often have at least one dairy serving with their milk, and often include another type of dairy in the entrée.

The guest of honor will be Skamokawa Farmstead Creamery. The goats and their handlers will be present in the recess area to meet the students, and then the dairy sample that day will be two styles of product made from the goat milk, a creamy farm style Chèvre cheese on whole grain toast, and a special caramel, Cajeta, served on a slice of green apple.

The farm owner, Vickie Allenback, will have lunch with the students and will be available to answer questions. Students are encouraged to invite their family members or parents to join them for lunch on Friday to experience this special event.
