Mule wrestlers head to state Mat Classic

Four Wahkiakum Mule wrestlers qualified for this year's state Mat Classic championship tournament this Friday and Saturday at the Tacoma Dome.

Luke Stacey, 132 lbs., Alex Johnson, 138 lbs., and Trystan Mendez, 182 lbs., all won their weight classes, and Kody Vik, 160 lbs., placed second in his. As a team, they placed fifth overall.

All four are seniors.

The championship tournament starts with eight wrestlers in each class. Stacey will open against freshman Travis Knauff of Garfield/Palouse. Johnson will take on sophomore Justis Anderson of Reardan. Vik will face sophomore Robert Arredondo of Warden, and Mendez will wrestle senior William Fager of Mary Walker.

The girls regional tournament was held in Kelso, and both Mica Kincade and Rayanna Carlon lost their first matches to the first ranked competitors. Both girls then won their next match of the day, but ultimately fell short later in the competition and were not able to advance to state this year.

Wrestling program supporters are sponsoring a send-off today (Thursday) to send the four wrestlers to the state tournament. They will leave the high school at 1 p.m., and, escorted by fire fighters, parade down Main Street and head off to Tacoma. The public is invited to urge them on.
