Lady Mules play for district title

The Wahkiakum Mules girls basketball team secured a berth at regionals following two wins against Onalaska and Adna, two teams that they have beaten easily all season.

On Saturday the Lady Mules travel to Chehalis, 6 p.m., to challenge Napavine for the district championship.

Good defense kept the Loggers to a low score and allowed the Lady Mules starting string to rest most of the second half while the bench got a little post season experience.

"I thought we could have played with a little more excitement," Coach Robbie Garrett said, "but having said that, I was pretty happy with our defense.

"Offensively we need to take care of the ball a little better. The girls worked hard though and we are excited to be going back to a regional game again this year."

Baylee Olsen led the team with 19 points, five rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocks. Sam Boyce scored seven points and added one rebound, four assists and four steals. Savannah Burdick had six points, four rebounds, one assist, three steals and one block. Peyton Souvenir scored five points and had six rebounds, five assists and four steals. Maddie Mace added three points and one steal. Tori Wegdahl, Grace Peacock and Sydney Hansen each scored two points. Wegdahl added three rebounds and two steals and Hansen had one rebound. Mya Kirzy had one point, two rebounds, one assist and two steals. Kaylee Bryant had one rebound and one block. Jessica Thomas had two rebounds and Marissa Longtain had two rebounds and one block.

The Lady Mules shot 50 percent from the free throw line and 38 percent from the field.

The team traveled to Tumwater on Tuesday for an 8 p.m. game against Adna and pounded out a 52-45 win.

Three teammates were in double digits. Souvenir led scoring with 13 points. She also had three rebounds, four assists and five steals. Boyce was close behind with 12 points, seven rebounds, two assists and five steals. Olsen added 10 points, four rebounds, one assist, one steal and one block. Posts Wegdahl and Bryant had eight points each. Wegdahl added eight rebounds, three assists and one steal, and Bryant had four rebounds, two assists and two blocks. Peacock had one rebound, Burdick had one steal, and Mace had two rebounds.

Brackets for regionals should be finalized on February 22, according to the http://www.central2b.com website.
