Ducks top Mules for title

It didn't take long for the Wahkiakum Lady Mules to pick up the pieces.

Last Thursday, they entertained the Toutle Lake Ducks in the final regular season game, a game whose winner would claim the Central League Championship.

After a slow start, the Mules turned on the defense and led 24-15 after at halftime. It was Toutle's turn in the second half, and they outscored the Mules 15-0 in the last four minutes to win 46-36.

Baylee Olsen led the Mule scoring with 11 points. Kaylee Bryant and Tori Wegdahl each had eight, Sam Boyce five and Maddie Mace four.

The result left the Mules in second place in league standings, with the Ducks claiming the league championship.

The Mules opened district tournament play Monday by defeating visiting South Bend 67-27.

The Mules jumped ahead 25-9 in the first quarter and never looked back.

"I thought we needed to pick it up defensively in the first half," Garrett said. "The second half was definitely better, though.

"Offensively I was really pleased. I thought the girls worked really well as a team and had some great ball movement. They also did a good job of moving without the ball which is something we have been working on, so that was nice."

Baylee Olsen led the Mule scoring with 18 points, including 10 in the third quarter. Peyton Souvenir put in 15, 13 in the first quarter. Tori Wegdahl scored 11, Sam Boyce 10, Maddie Mace four, Kaylee Bryant two, Grace Peacock two, Mya Kirzy two, Savannah Burdick two, and Sydney Hansen one.

Wegdahl and Souvenir each had seven rebounds; Olsen and Hansen six each, and Kaylee Bryant five. Boyce made five steals and five assists; wegdahl had four assists, and Souvenir made three. mace and Peacock eah had three steals. Bryant blocked two shots, and Olsen, Jessica Thomas and Mace each blocked one.

The Mules take on the Onalaska Lady Loggers this Saturday a quarterfinal game; time and location are yet to be announced at press time. The Mules swept Onalaska in their Central League games this season. In other quarter final games, Toutle takes on Life Christian Napavine plays Raymond, and Adna takes on Pacific League champion Ilwaco.
