Virginia Jane Bacon, 92, of Cathlamet, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family, on January 10, 2015.
She was born November 26, 1922, in Skamokawa, to David and Bella Strait. She was raised on a farm which contributed to her work ethic. She attended Skamokawa Grade School and graduated from Wahkiakum High School in 1940. She married Robert A. Bacon on November 25, 1940, and resided in Cathlamet her entire married life.
The Bacons owned The Toggery, a menswear store and later Bacon’s Variety Store. They also built and operated Bob’s Burgers, the original drive-in in Cathlamet, on Ocean Beach Highway. Bob and Virginia enjoyed ballroom dancing and clam digging while at their cabin in Ocean Park. They enjoyed traveling and later spending winters in Arizona. She was an avid basketball fan and held season tickets to the Trailblazers for many years. Virginia loved the Lord and and attended the Assembly of God Church in Cathlamet until her health declined.
Survivors include her husband of 74 years, Robert A. Bacon; daughter Debra Vrtiska and her husband, Timothy; grandchildren Sheryl Landon of Seattle, Susan Seaberg of Enumclaw, Nicole Carter of Longview and Robert Watkins of Reno, Nev. She was preceded in death by her parents and a daughter, Cathy Seaberg.
Services were held yesterday (Wednesday). Arrangements were by Dowling Funeral Home of Cathlamet.
