June Sophia (Long) Bergquist, 88, died at her Naselle residence on Christmas evening surrounded by her family. The daughter of Fanny and William Long, she was born in Astoria on July 9, 1926. She was raised in Rosburg and graduated from Naselle High School with the class of 1944. In 1946 she married John Bergquist and in November of 2014 they celebrated their 68th anniversary together.
June was a wife, mother and homemaker. She worked at the Naselle Post Office and later as a bookkeeper for Naselle Auto Body and also for her husband's business C & J Logging. For a number of years June was active with the Naselle Fire Department as an EMT. At age 50 she began attending Grays Harbor College where she earned her degree as a licensed practical nurse. She was employed at several medical practices in Ilwaco until retirement.
June was an active member of the Naselle Congregational Church. An avid baker, she enjoyed spending days baking and cooking for various church functions. She was active in the Deep River Post of the American Legion and also the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Besides cooking and baking, June kept busy with various hand crafts.
Besides her husband of 68 years, June is survived by son David (Cindy) Bergquist of Astoria; brother Joe Long of Portland; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Willard Long.
June's memorial service will be Saturday, January 10, 2015, 1 p.m., at the Naselle Congregational Church with a reception following.
