Pirates, Trojans stop Mules

The Wahkiakum Mules boys basketball team lost to Adna Thursday night at home, 53-30.

The teams were tied at half-time, 24-24, but Adna took advantage of poor shooting by the Mules in the third quarter and pulled ahead 40-29, never looking back.

"I thought it went really well," Coach Todd Souvenir said. "I was really proud of them. We ran out of gas in the third quarter, but they worked really hard on defense. I think the score looks a little worse than how it actually was."

Senior Brandon Budd led the team with 10 points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals. Freshman Zach Brown scored seven points against a 6'8" Adna defender, pulled down six rebounds, added one assist and two steals. Hank Brown had five points, three rebounds, one assist and two steals. Joey Moore added five points, five rebounds and two steals. Ryan Quigley had two points, two rebounds and one steal. Cody Terpsma scored one point and pulled down one rebound and Kael McKinley had one rebound.

The Mules shot 32 percent from the field and made nine of 18 free throws.

"That was the best practice of the year so far," Coach Souvenir said. "Hopefully it opens their eyes to what they can do."

The Mules lost to the Pe Ell Trojans on Tuesday, 63-40.

Brown led the team in scoring with 15 points. Budd added 12, Moore had nine, Quigley had three points and Wilson scored one.

"We came out flat on defense," Coach Todd Souvenir said. "We got behind a bigger, more experienced team and couldn't recover. We really got pushed around on the boards. That needs improvement."

The Mules shot 57 percent from the free throw line and were 28 percent from the field.

The Mules host Winlock tonight (Thursday) and head to Elma on Saturday. Morton/White Pass comes to WHS on Tuesday.
