Timberwolves beat Mules 47-20

by Rick Nelson

The young Wahkiakum Mule football team took another blow in the chin with a 47-6 loss last Friday at Morton/White Pass.

The Mules received the opening kickoff and marched deep into MWP territory, but a blitzing defender stole a handoff. MWP took advantage of the shift in momentum and went up 6-0 at 3:49 of the first quarter.

MWP boosted the lead to 12-0 at 9:18 of the second quarter. The Timberwolves scored again at 6:47 and tacked on a two-point conversion for a 20-0 lead.

The Mules responded with a scoring drive. Gunnar Blix, who had moved to fullback from quarterback, scored on a four-yard run. He kicked the conversion to cut MWP's lead to 20-7 with 5:10 left in the half.

The Timberwolves tacked on another touchdown and conversion kick just before halftime for a 27-7 lead. They added another seven points early in the third quarter for a 34-7 lead.

Brandon Budd got the Mules' second score on a 47-yard pass play from Zach Brown at 5:10 of the third quarter. Brown kicked the conversion to make the score 34-14.

MWP scored again in the third quarter and early in the fourth for their 47-14 lead. Hank Ferguson closed the scoring with a 23-yard touchdown run for the Mules with 2:51 left in the game, making the final score 47-20.

The Mules gained 196 yards on the ground and 116 yards in the air. Blix led the Mule running attack with 98 yards; he left the game late in the second quarter with a cut next to his eye. Budd gained 46 yards, Ferguson 45, and Brown 12. Blix completed three of four passes, with one interception, for 40 yards. Brown completed four of nine passes, with one interception, for 76 yards.

Blix and Ferguson each made 15 tackles, Joey Moore 14, Cody Terpsma 12; Budd, Tanner Bergseng, Brock Cothren, and Kody Vik all had nine, and Kyle Stump seven.

The Mules stay on the road this Friday and head to Onalaska.
