Sheriff's Report

Wahkiakum County law enforcement officers and emergency response personnel handled a variety of reports during the past week, including:

September 22 — 10:18 a.m. Child abuse was reported at a Rosedale residence. 5:14 p.m. The Puget Island Fire Department responded to the report of smoke at a business on Puget Island.

September 23 — 3:50 a.m. The Cathlamet ambulance responded to aid a Puget Island resident. 11:40 a.m. The Cathlamet ambulance responded to aid an ailing Elochoman Valley resident. 2:47 p.m. A burglary was reported at a Rosburg address. 3:22 p.m. A caller reported a disoriented motorist on Puget Island, but deputies were unable to locate the driver. 3:23 p.m. The Cathlamet ambulance transported a man with heart problems from the clinic to the hospital. 3:36 p.m. A domestic disturbance was reported at a Little Cape Horn residence; a deputy responded and two subjects agreed to leave. 3:55 p.m. Animal bones and several abandoned dogs were found on property on Puget Island. Some of the dogs were in cages and others were loose. A deputy responded. 4:34 p.m. A Cathlamet resident was reported missing.

September 24 — 7:10 a.m. A Rosburg road was closed for culvert replacement. 10:09 a.m. A caller from the high school reported a runaway. The student later returned to the school. 11:07 a.m. A Skamokawa resident reported that a male subject was trespassing and had caused a disturbance over the sale of a vehicle. 1:26 p.m. A Deep River resident reported that a bull had been killed and other cows had died mysteriously. 1:35 p.m. A caller reported hearing gunshots in Cathlamet; after investigation, the report was declared unfounded and attributed to construction at the high school grandstand. 3:17 p.m. A caller reported animal abuse at a Rosburg home. 6:24 p.m. A caller was concerned about a pit bull at a Puget Island residence.

September 25 — 4:55 p.m. A caller reported seeing two people grab what appeared to be a bag of marijuana from some bushes in the Cathlamet area; deputies made contact with the two subjects. 6:14 p.m. A juvenile was reported missing from a Rosburg home. 10:40 p.m. A Puget Island resident reported an assault. 11:02 p.m. A Rosedale resident complained about his neighbor’s loud music. He had asked them to turn down the music but they refused and turned it up.

September 26 — 7:39 a.m. A Puget Island resident reported that a neighbor’s tarp had blown onto their property and caused damage to their home; the caller was advised that it was a civil matter. 10:18 a.m. The Cathlamet ambulance transported a woman with chest pain from the clinic to the hospital. 2:45 p.m. A caller reported a tree down on a Cathlamet roadway. 4:03 p.m. A resident on the east end of the county reported seeing smoke coming from a light switch; the Cathlamet Fire Department responded. 4:31 p.m. The District 4 Fire Department was called in by Cowlitz County to assist with a motor vehicle accident on Beaver Creek Road. 5:02 p.m. A caller was concerned that the school bus from Pe Ell might be stuck on KM. 6:51 p.m. The Cathlamet ambulance responded to aid a Cathlamet resident who may have had a stroke. 7:44 p.m. The Cathlamet ambulance responded to the high school in Cathlamet to assist someone with a sternum injury. 8:09 p.m. The Cathlamet ambulance responded to aid a Puget Island resident who was having difficulty breathing. 8:28 p.m. A caller reported seeing a fight and juveniles smoking pot at a Cathlamet park. The caller requested more patrols.

September 27 — 10:13 a.m. A 9-1-1 call came in from what turned out to be an unoccupied Skamokawa residence. 11:16 a.m. The Cathlamet ambulance responded to aid an elderly Puget Island resident who had high blood pressure. 12:52 p.m. The Grays River ambulance responded to aid a Rosburg resident who had fallen off a roof. 1:10 p.m. A caller reported a vehicle being driven erratically on SR 4 west of County Line Park.

September 28 — 10:46 a.m. A Cathlamet resident reported seeing a suspicious person. 11:21 a.m. A Rosburg resident reported hearing gun shots. 12:44 p.m. A Grays River resident reported the theft of gasoline. 3:09 p.m. A Cathlamet resident reported a stolen vehicle; it had been taken by a relative two days earlier. The vehicle was later returned by the relative and the caller decided not to complete the report. 3:51 p.m. A young motorcyclist was caught and taken into custody after attempting to elude pursuit by reaching triple digit speeds on SR 4; his father was contacted. 5:59 p.m. The Cathlamet ambulance responded to aid a Rosedale resident with chest pain. 7:35 p.m. The Skamokawa Fire Department responded to the report of a fire connected to microwave use in the Alger Creek area. 9:01 p.m. The Cathlamet ambulance responded to aid a Cathlamet resident who had a seizure; LifeFlight was activated.

September 29 — 9:03 a.m. A Skamokawa resident reported that his neighbor’s cows were on his property. When a deputy investigated, the owner of the cows reported that the heavy gate to his own property had been left open and property that he had leased to someone else had been vandalized. The deputy found a broken window and red spray paint on the walls. 1:28 p.m. A Rosedale resident reported a theft. 1:49 p.m. A Rosburg resident reported finding several cows on his property; the owner was contacted and he collected the cows. 4:15 p.m. Someone called 911 and hung up. Dispatch called back and a Rosedale resident requested that her husband be removed from the home. The caller then asserted that her pastor had arrived and she hung up again after refusing to clarify her name and address. Dispatch attempted to make contact again and the caller said she was safe with her pastor. 4:45 p.m. A Rosburg resident collected his cattle after someone complained that they had gotten out. 7 p.m. A motorist reported that a car had run out of gas on the east end of the county and the driver and passenger were attempting to flag down help.

September 30 — 9:09 a.m. A Puget Island resident reported that a neighbor’s dog had been wandering around the area the last couple days. 1:46 p.m. A caller reported that someone had driven off the road and through her fence in Deep River. 3:24 p.m. A motorist reported that a deer was still alive with a broken leg after being hit on Puget Island; Fish and Wildlife was notified. 4:06 p.m. A Cathlamet resident reported receiving abusive phone calls from someone claiming to be from the IRS; a deputy said he would contact the FBI or IRS. 7:25 p.m. A caller complained that kids driving a four wheeler and a tractor almost caused an accident in the Skamokawa area. 8:28 p.m. A door was found unlocked at a Cathlamet business.

October 1 — 8:05 a.m. A motorist complained that a log truck had been traveling at high speeds and tailgating. 10:22 a.m. A Cathlamet resident reported being harassed by an auto dialer; a deputy ascertained that it was a fax auto dialer and was able to resolve the problem. 12:45 p.m. The Cathlamet ambulance responded to aid a Rosedale resident with mental issues. 1:08 p.m. A Rosedale resident complained about noise at neighbor’s home. 2:20 p.m. A welfare check was requested for a mental health professional who was in the Grays River area. 2:29 p.m. An Elochoman Valley resident reported malicious mischief involving two flat tires. 2:40 p.m. A fire alarm was activated at a residence on the east side of the county.

October 2 — 11:31 a.m. A caller reported that someone had “cut cookies” on the high school football field in Cathlamet. 12:58 p.m. A caller reported seeing two girls walking west on SR 4 in the Elochoman Valley area. The girls matched the description of two Astoria girls that were reported missing. The girls were returned to their parents. 1:26 p.m. The Cathlamet Fire Department responded to the report of an electrical outlet fire in Cathlamet. 4:56 p.m. A caller reported several cows in a Skamokawa roadway. 7:32 p.m. The Cathlamet ambulance responded to aid a Cathlamet resident who was in pain. 10:26 p.m. A caller reported that his son had hit something on SR 4 and that it had caused damage to the vehicle; a deputy investigated and found that the boy had hit a porcupine.

October 3 — 9:40 a.m. Additional items were found at the location where the two missing girls from Astoria were found and were taken in as evidence to the Astoria Police Department. 11:11 a.m. The Cathlamet ambulance responded to aid a Puget Island resident who was requesting an oxygen saturation check. 11:40 a.m. A caller reported that a student’s car window had been smashed at the high school in Cathlamet. 12:32 p.m. A caller reported that a passenger side window had been broken out in the Elochoman Valley area. 9:25 p.m. A caller requested a welfare check on a Grays River resident. 9:27 p.m. The Grays River ambulance responded to aid an elderly Grays River resident who was having heart attack symptoms; LifeFlight was activated. 10 p.m. A door was found unlocked at a Cathlamet business; a deputy did a walk through and the caller reported that an item was missing. 10:34 p.m. A caller reported hearing shots in Cathlamet.

October 4 — 2:29 a.m. The Cathlamet Fire Department investigated the report of a strong gas smell in Cathlamet; they were unable to locate the problem. 9:21 a.m. A juvenile pulled a fire alarm at the elementary school in Cathlamet; the alarm was silenced and reset. 11:31 a.m. A Puget Island resident complained about dump trunks that had been speeding in the area for several weeks. 2:08 p.m. The Cathlamet ambulance responded to aid an elderly Rosedale resident who was short of breath. 4:21 p.m. A caller reported that the driver of a sports car was playing chicken with a large group of motorcyclists, driving erratically and at a high rate of speed on SR 4 in the Elochoman Valley area. 6:21 p.m. The Cathlamet ambulance aided an elderly Cathlamet resident with a lift assist. 6:46 p.m. A Deep River resident reported a dead cow in a nearby field. 8:43 p.m. A parent reported finding a large amount of marijuana; a deputy collected the evidence. 9:46 p.m. The Cathlamet ambulance responded to aid a Cathlamet resident who had fallen.

October 5 — 12:57 a.m. A caller reported a stolen purse at the Duck Inn in Skamokawa and demanded that a deputy respond; the woman found the purse and called back to say she no longer needed a deputy. 11:51 a.m. The Grays River ambulance and a deputy responded when a Deep River resident complained about a neighbor’s controlled burn; there were ashes on the caller’s deck and the smell of smoke filled his home. The fire was extinguished and the neighbor was advised of safe burning practices. 5:06 p.m. A caller reported seeing a female driver pick up two kids who had been hiding in the bushes in the Rosedale area; the caller believed the kids were involved in an earlier drug complaint. 5:20 p.m. A caller reported that a juvenile was missing; it was later determined that she was a runaway. The juvenile is considered “at risk”. 7:08 p.m. A caller reported that he hit a deer on SR 4 near the summit of KM. 7:52 p.m. A Cathlamet resident reported hearing kids making strange noises outside her home. 7:58 p.m. The Cathlamet ambulance responded to aid an elderly Rosedale resident who was having a heart attack; the resident passed away.
