Information provided by Susan Schillios from The Charlotte House Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault Services says they want everyone to know that October is nationally recognized as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Domestic violence isn’t a rare phenomenon in America. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, an estimated 1.3 million women are victims of physical assault by an intimate partner each year, and one in every four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime.

St. James Family Center/The Charlotte House provides services to victims of domestic violence, including legal and medical advocacy, information and referral services. Programs offer personal support to victims and families of domestic violence. Are you in an abusive relationship?

• Is your partner violent towards you?

• Do you make excuses for your partner’s behavior?

• Do you feel controlled by your partner? • Do you fear going home?

• Do you blame yourself for the violence?

• Do you feel helpless, trapped and alone?

• Do you blame the violence on stress or drugs/alcohol?

• Are your children being abused?

• Does your partner threaten to harm or take your children?

• Do you find yourself lying to hide the abuse?

• Does your partner embarrass or humiliate you?

No one deserves to be abused. The responsibility for the violence belongs to the abuser. It is never the victim’s fault.
