Established as The Skamokawa Eagle in 1891
A Farmers Market with several local farms in attendance was held on September 23 in the covered area at the Jr. High/Elementary School. Farmers who participated enjoyed the enthusiasm of the children as they sampled their product, asked questions, and enjoyed the day. In total the Farmers Market served over 125 students, some of them more than once as they had the option of visiting again during their recess times.
The Children sampled fresh apple slices, applesauce, salmon dip on crackers, cheese, smoothies made with kale, banana, apples and milk, cut up raw veggies, and kale chips. The Students gave each item thumbs up or down as they tasted them, and voted for their favorite item.
Farmers present that day, were surprised by the willingness of the students to try new foods. After sampling they agreed they liked some things they thought they would not, and many students helped and encouraged their friends to try the samples.
The item that received the most votes was the Salmon Dip. Many requests were made for the recipe.
Organizers wish to recognize Bobbie Gaines of the Parent Teacher Organization, and local producers Sheila and Kara Haney and Char Damitio of the Wahkiakum Community Garden, Carrie Backman of Backman's Farm and Fish, Susan Burkhalter of Grays River Holsteins, Diane Stockhouse of Stockhouse Farms and Farmers Market and Carol Carver of Islands End Farm.
A drawing was held of all the children attending the Farmers Market and one lucky student won a personal size blender to make smoothies at home. Students who attended agreed this should be an annual event and organizers hope they can participate again next year.
