Marina boat show receives good marks

Commissioners of Port District 1 convened last Thursday for their September meeting that included discussion of the recent boat show, dredging, and the relocation of the RV sewer dump.

“Everybody I talked to seemed to be pretty happy with the boat show being later,” Commissioner Gary Quigley said.

“All the vendors told me they wanted to be back next year,” Commissioner Bob Kizziar said, “and I went up to the boat show in Port Townsend last weekend and talked to vendors up there and quite a few people were interested in coming down. There is a chance that it could grow to be even bigger and better.”

A Request for Proposal (RFP) has been drawn up by port Manager Jackie Lea and Counsel Tim Hanigan as the Port begins to look for someone to work on the permit process for dredging.

“Hopefully we’ll find someone to do it,” Hanigan said, “and they’ll get started this year and the majority of the permitting process will be done next year. Then the dredging, if everything goes right, the year after.”

The commissioners looked over and discussed the plans for the new RV sewer location that were drawn up by David Vik. The plans were okayed by Gray & Osborne, an engineering company, according to Lea.

Some boat owners who have had moorage for more than 30 days have not turned in copies of their insurance information, despite being notified numerous times.

“I don’t think that they understand that they have to give us a copy,” Lea said. “Legally, we need a copy.”

“We don’t just want a copy of their insurance,” Kizziar added. “We want to be co-insured.”

Parrotfeather has been found in the marina and staff will be working to remove the non-native, invasive weed now that Labor Day has passed.
