On the seining grounds

A beach seining crew and Fish and Wildlife observer conducted a pilot beach seine fishery last Wednesday on Ohrberg's Beach, Puget Island. Hans Eykel, who contributed these photos, said the crew caught a few fish.

The fishers set the seine perpendicular to the beach and then brought it around and pulled it onto the beach, where they checked the fish that were caught and repaired holes in the net.

Fishery managers hope the seines will be less lethal to endangered wild salmon than gillnets have been.
