Two WHS seniors receive state honors

Two members of Wahkiakum High School’s Class of 2014 were selected to receive the Washington State Honors Award.

Academically, these two students were in the top 10 percent of all seniors in the state of Washington, and their eligibility was based on a combined score of their GPA and SAT results.

Lainie Ferguson and valedictorian Dylan Hansen met the criteria for the award and were nominated by the school.

“Both Dylan and Lainie are habitually curious,” Audrey Petterson, their English teacher, said. “They constantly question information that comes to them, its relation to them and ultimately, how they can use it to improve themselves and their world.”

Ferguson will attend the University of Washington in the fall to get a bachelor of science in psychology. She plans to work in research. Hansen is headed to Western Washington University to study English Literature. He wants to be a writer.

“They are standout students,” High School Principal Stephanie Leitz said. “Their academic achievements and accomplishments set them apart. They are leaders both in and out of the classroom, striving to reach their goals and continually improve. I look forward to hearing about the amazing things they will do in the future. I know they will both be very successful.”

“I am proud of them. This is a pretty prestigious award.”
