Two Wahkiakum Mule golfers made the final cut, and the Mules placed fourth overall in the state 2B golf tournament this week. Here's the report from Coach Nick Vavoudis:
After day one at state, district runner up Austin Good waited an hour and a half to see if he made the cut. Early, his 89 looked safely placed among the top 20 day two qualifiers. Every 15 minutes the cut number 92 began to lower. An hour later it looked like 91 was gonna make it but even team mate Elliot Haney, who shot 88 began to worry.
The final group finally posted and the cut was 90 and the Mules had two players qualify for the team event sitting in 6th place. Zach Calvert ended his High School career with a 100 on the very difficult Oakbrook course.
Day two, both qualifiers agreed they could improve by 5 strokes on the way to the course which might put the team in sight of a trophy. Senior Austin Good made his prediction come true with an 84, 14th place and so did junior Elliot Haney posting an 83, and 12th place.
While the scoring system is based on what place each team member finishes, their two day total team score of 345 vaulted them past Pomeroy and Lopez Island and was just one stroke short of third place finisher Colfax 344, the only other public school in the top four. Private schools St. George's and DeSalles finished first and second.
