All breeds welcome at lure coursing event

The hounds will be running this weekend at Misty Rivers Plantation, 117 Cross Dike Road on Puget Island. These lure coursing or racing events are usually confined to AKC registered sight hounds, but this weekend will be open to all comers including non-registered breeds, mixed breeds, and family pets in general.

The event is sponsored by the Willamette Valley Basenji Club, and for this three day Memorial Day event, they are including AKC"s new category, C.A.T. (Coursing Aptitude Test) which is open to all dogs. Registration for these dogs is each morning at 8 a.m. and each afternoon at 1 p.m. Running fee is $25.

The running will start each day, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, at around 9 a.m. and continue until all competitions are complete, usually around mid afternoon. Each day will begin with qualification tests and C.A.T. runs, followed by the sight hound trials for Best in Breed, and end with competition for Best in Field.

The public is invited to attend, along with their well-leashed dogs. Regular contestants and campers will park in back beside the coursing field; spectators may park in front on the grass beside the driveway. Restrooms are available, and there is a small area for handicapped parking beside the field. For additional information call Judy Brawn at 562-1925.
