VFW post creates veterans' memorial

The Cathlamet VFW Post had contemplated the idea of installing a memorial at Greenwood Cemetery for years but never had the funds to turn the dream into reality.

It was the recent loss of a fellow veteran, Gary Huber that spurred members into action this year.

“Gary had been talking about the memorial again,” VFW Commander Danny Eaton said, “so we formed a committee.”

The memorial is dedicated to all the local men and women who have served in the Armed Forces. The large black basalt stone was donated by the Burns family, and the Wirkkala family provided the cement for the base, which is almost a foot thick, according to Eaton. Mike Mouliot helped to place the stone. The brass plaque was made back east.

All the committee, which included Huber, Eaton, Bob Roche, Gary York, Ron Kimmel, Rodney Ingersoll, Martin Ostervald and Don Bartlett, has left to do is attach the brass, which they hope to do before the warm spell is over.

Anyone who would like to donate to help defray the cost can contact the Cathlamet VFW Post members.

There will be a dedication on Memorial Day, May 26, at 9 a.m.
