Established as The Skamokawa Eagle in 1891

On The Street

The Eagle takes great pleasure in introducing Kathi Howell, our new advertising representative. Kathi has lived in the Cathlamet area in the past and has moved back. She replaces Sarah Lawrence, who has gone on maternity leave.

There's lots going on in the Wahkiakum business community, and Kathi and Eagle reporter Diana Zimmerman filed these short reports this week.

New drive-in operaters

Susan Briggs and Amber Nara (mother and daughter) have taken over the drive-in at the intersection of SR 4 and Jacobson Road and renamed it Lulu's Burger Shack.

They are both originally from Toledo and now reside in Longview. They opened the restaurant on March 1, and they have a whole new menu full of burgers, baskets and shakes, and ice cream cones, too. They boast of economy friendly prices and are planning to continue renovation of the facility as they go. They plan to have inside seating eventually.

Maria’s Place

A new restaurant, Maria’s Place, will open at 88 Main Street (formerly The Diner on Main) on Monday if all goes as planned for Maria Zapien and her family. The new venture will be a second restaurant for the Zapiens, who all work in the food industry in one form or another.

The family is from the LaCenter area, and Zapien is not looking forward to the daily drive. If they find success here, they may relocate.

They have been busy all week cleaning and setting up in preparation for the big day. They plan to serve Mexican and American fare and will be open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

They should have their liquor license in three months, at which point they will begin pouring margaritas.
