Chinook tribe author lecturing on David Douglas

Author Jack Nisbet and Chinook Tribe Member Tony Johnson will present a joint lecture on Scottish naturalist David Douglas on Saturday, March 8 at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum in Ilwaco at 2 p.m.

Between 1825 and 1834, Scottish naturalist David Douglas traveled extensively between Cape Disappointment and the Grays River and Willapa Bay areas. He was able to develop a rapport with several Chinook and Chehalis tribal families while collecting local flora and fauna for science. During that time he learned to speak the Chinook jargon, which enhanced his relationship with the tribes.

Nisbet, an educator, naturalist and author has published two books about Douglas, The Collector and David Douglas: A Naturalist at Work. Johnson is the Chinook Tribe Cultural Committee Chair and was the Shoalwater Tribal Educational Director at the Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum in 2008.

The Columbia Pacific Heritage Museum is located at 115 SE Lake Street in Ilwaco. For more information about this free event, call (360) 642-3446 or check out their website at columbiapacificheritagemuseum.org.
