Santa Lucia celebration

Members of the Sugar & Spice 4-H Club, shown here busy making saffron buns for the Santa Lucia celebration to be held at the Appelo Archives Center this Saturday afternoon. Members learned that the saffron used in the making of the buns comes from the dried stigmas of the Saffron Crocus, thus making it a very expensive spice. With its addition to the dough, a yellow hue is produced. Swedish tradition and the serving of the Saffron Buns represents light during the long, dark winter days. The Santa Lucia celebration begins at 3 p.m. at 1056 SR 4 in Naselle.
