Westend news

The 4th annual Halloween Trick or Treating party held at the Grays River Valley Center was another great success, not too scary, lots of goodies and lots of really cute costumed kids. We would like to thank all the door minders and kitchen help for helping us give the kids a safe and dry place to trick or treat. We also had quite a few who enjoyed our showing of old cartoons and the original Fantasia movie with free green punch and hot popcorn.

Next year we plan to expand our offerings to include a possible Haunted House, games, etc. since the holiday will fall on a weekend night. In order to do this though we will need more volunteers, so if you are interested in participating please let us know. Please call 465-2310 or 465-2775 with your ideas and offerings.

The Free Friday Night Movie at the Grays River Valley Center this week will be a family friendly show. Bring the kids and enjoy a comfy evening with a good movie and reasonably priced concessions. The show begins at 7 p.m.

The annual fall pancake breakfast put on by the American Legion Deep River Post #111, had been scheduled for Saturday. It has been postponed until November 16th so participants can attend the memorial service for Lyle Patterson in Longview.

This breakfast includes all you can eat pancakes, with sides of eggs the way you like them, ham or sausage, milk, juice and coffee cooked and served with a smile by legion members. Serving begins at 8:30 a.m. and I believe it is still $5 a plate.

Proceeds from this fundraiser help to maintain the building, fund scholarships and veterans as well as local charities. Wahkiakum County is fortunate to have organizations like this, with such dedicated people who really care about their community. Let’s support them and all their efforts. Thank you.

A special Happy Anniversary to my good friends, Alan and Penny Gregory. After all you have had to deal with this past few months, take this day and be thankful that you have each other’s love and support now and for many years to come. Take a day off and celebrate together.

I’m really happy to say “welcome home” to Zenaida Toftemark. She has been away much too long, but I hope that her next homecoming will be an even happier occasion and she will be coming home with Elmer, their adopted son. She must return to the Philippines after the holidays to complete the adoption and immigration procedures, but it has certainly taken a long time. This is one lucky little boy, to have new parents who are willing to give so much in order to have him with them, and to become a part of such a loving family. Hopefully the rest of the paperwork, etc. will take less time, and you can come home together soon. We missed you, Zenaida.

Next Monday marks another Veteran’s Day. Our country should be on our knees in appreciation of the men and women, past and present who have given all for the freedoms we enjoy. Unfortunately, I think this country has not done enough for these veterans. Whenever I see a soldier, I purposefully approach them and tell them “thank you.” They at least deserve that. Veteran’s Day shouldn’t be just another day off. Seek out at least one vet or soldier and do something nice for him/her, even if it’s a simple thank you and hand shake. They deserve more than this country is giving them. Happy Veteran’s Day.
