Timberwolves rip Mules; regular season finale ahead

The Morton/White Pass Timberwolves showed the Wahkiakum Mules why they're the state's top ranked Class 2B football team last Friday by handing the visiting Mules a 51-0 Central League loss.

"They're solid," commented Mule Coach Eric Hansen. "They have a good line and two good running backs. Their quarterback is accurate in his passes and he can run the ball. Their defense swarms to the ball. They played the game the way it's supposed to be played.

"I thought Shane Souvenir, Mason Mackey and Seth Doumit played well for us."

The Timberwolves received the opening kickoff and mounted a six minutes scoring drive. The Mules received MWP's kick and had a drive stopped by a penalty. MWP mounted another scoring drive. A pass interception on the Mules' next drive gave the Timberwolves the ball deep in Mule territory, and they punched in another score, leading 20-0 at 9:10 of the second quarter.

And so it went. The hosts led 32-0 at halftime. When they went up 45-0 in the third quarter, both coaches put in their junior varsities to finish out the game.

The Timberwolves chalked up 419 yards of offense, 288 on the ground and 131 in the air. The Mules had 86 yards on 74 rushing yards--58 in the third quarter--and one 12-yard pass.

Mackey was the leading rusher with 46 yards on 11 carries. Gunnar Blix completed one of four passes for 12 yards; Mackey had the reception.

On defense Blix had 15 tackles, Nathan Cothren 11, and Mackey and Travis Wegdahl nine each.

The Mules host the Toutle Lake Ducks this Friday to close out the regular season schedule. A game scheduled for November 2 with Manson has been cancelled.

The Mules have clinched third place in the Central League standings, Hansen said. They'll have a bye next week and host a game the following week with the fourth place team from the Pacific League with a spot in the playoffs on the line. The Naselle Comets host the Ocosta Wildcats this Friday, and the winner of that game will likely be the Pacific's fourth place team.

The Mules will also honor their senior fall sports athletes before the game this Friday.
