Westend news

The 2nd Annual Oktoberfest Dinner at the Grays River Valley Center last Friday evening was wonderful. In my opinion and that of others, the sauerbraten was even better than last year. We want to thank Steve and Linda Ramsay, Deanne Bulick (our cooks), Ann Bulick (our bartender), Randy “Splash” Collver (our dishwasher), Ramona Collver (in charge of raffle and dinner tickets), Rebecca (daughter of Bryon and Holly Parrino), and Crystal and Sarah Leeper (granddaughters of Steve and Linda Ramsay) for all their hard work in making this another successful fundraiser.

Our winner of the beautiful quilt was a local resident, Joanne Bay of Rosburg (you may know her from the Rosburg Store), was thrilled when told that she had the winning ticket. She said she would cherish the quilt. We look forward to another wonderful event next year.

Enjoy Free Friday Night Movies at the Grays River Valley Center every week. “Oblivion,” a 2013 sci-fi release, rated PG-13 will be shown this Friday at 7 p.m. Next Friday, we will show "John Carter," a family friendly movie released in 2012. Remember, the first and fourth Friday night movies are chosen so kids are especially welcome. If you have a request for an upcoming movie, contact us and we will see if we can get it.

Here are some changes for some of our local groups and their meetings. The yoga group led by Jack Braman (465-2629 for more info) will now meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Grays River Methodist Church from 5 to 6:30 p.m. and the Thursday night Art Group (for info call Noreen Fitts at 465-2544) will meet at this location as well from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., instead of the Grays River Valley Center.

Jeanne Braman (465-2629) has resumed the aerobics classes in the gym of the Grays River Valley Center on Monday and Wednesday from 6-8 p.m.

On Saturday, the public is invited to join the Wahkiakum Search and Rescue group and welcoming a Life Flight helicopter for field training at Johnson Park (old Rosburg School). The helicopter landing, weather and politics permitting, will take place at about noon, and the public is invited to attend and watch. Information will also be available to the public concerning membership to the group. For more information regarding this event please contact Arlene Stefan at 465-2919.

A flu shot clinic will take place on October 24 in the Rosburg Hall from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. through the Wahkiakum Health Department. For more information, please contact Gina at the Health Department 360 795-6207. Lunches are also available on that day sponsored by CAP.

Halloween is coming, and the Grays River Valley Center at Johnson Park will host its 4th annual All Hallows Eve on October 31. Trick or Treating will begin at 5 p.m. inside the building where it is nice and dry and safe for all young ghosties and goblins. There will be a free Halloween movie following the march through the halls for treats. Popcorn and drinks will be available at the concession stand during the movie.

Please take note that the phone number in last week’s article was incorrect, to call for information regarding the Rosburg Community Club’s annual Holiday Bazaar. The event will take place on November 2. The day long event features fun, food and all manner of craft items for sale by local vendors. The event is one of their main fundraisers of the year, and proceeds help to maintain the building, fund scholarships, and all the other contributions this group makes to our community. For more information on this event or to rent a space for your wares, please call 465-2234.

Wishing each of you a wonderful day.

Happy Anniversary to Carl and Anita Adair. Wishing you many more celebrations together.

My deepest sympathies to Penny Gregory and her family following the passing of her mother, Gloria Nickolas of Tacoma. She was a delightful lady, and she and her husband, Nick, were the ones who volunteered to put on the annual spaghetti feed at the Grays River Valley Center at Johnson Park using Nick’s secret recipe for spaghetti sauce. She will certainly be missed by her family and friends. God speed, Gloria, your lovely memories will be treasured by all who knew you.

Here’s a “why would I want to live anywhere else?” story. I had a call this week from a reader who told me of her experience with the new local floral shop in Cathlamet, Kullerful Bokuets. The caller called to speak with someone about ordering flowers and left a message when no one answered at the shop. The employee was at a local athletic event (we all know how important it is to support our local kids), returned the call and then actually left the event to meet the caller at the shop where her order was taken and she was very pleased with the service she received. All the more reason to shop local, in my opinion. There are not many places you get this individual service, and with a smile. Thank you Kullerful Bokuets, for being a local business and caring about our community.
