The Wahkiakum Mule football team rolled over the Pe Ell Trojans 36-12 in a sometimes wet and rainy homecoming football game last Friday.
The win left the Mules with a 4-0 record, tied with Morton/White Pass and Napavine for first place in the Central League.
Mason Mackey put the Mules on the scoreboard at 8:18 of the first quarter with a three-yard run. Gunnar Blix ran the conversion for an 8-0 Mule lead. Mackey scored his second of the night at 10:28 of the second quarter on a two-yard run; the conversion failed.
Blix scored on a one-yard run with 2:23 left in the second quarter to put the Mules up 20-0. Pe Ell quarterback Aidan Arrington scored on a 13-yard run just before halftime to cut the Mule lead to 20-6.
Nathan Cothren scooted through the Pe Ell defense for a 53-yard touchdown run at 9:40 of the third quarter. Austin Good ran the conversion for a 28-6 Mule lead.
Arrington scored again for Pe Ell at 7:18 of the third quarter to cut the lead to 28-12, and the Mules responded with a quick scoring drive with Good scoring on a 17-yard run at 2:30 of the third quarter. Cothren ran the conversion for a 36-12 Mule lead, and the score stood that way through the rainy fourth quarter
The Mules gained 321 yards on 45 rushes and 161 yards on 10 passes for 482 yards of offense. Pe Ell managed 132 yards rushing and 95 in the air for 227 yards of offense.
Good led the Mule rushing attack with 106 yards on 11 carries. Cothren gained 95 on 11 carries, Macky 78 on 15 runs, and Blix had 40 yards on eight runs. Blix completed 10 of 14 passes, with one interception. Good caught four for 75 yards; Seth Doumit had three for 62 yards, and Travis Wegdahl two for 15 yards.
Trystan Mendez led the defense with 11 tackles; Blix had 10, Shane Souvenir eight, Wegdahl and Mackey six each, Doumit, Ethan Cothren and Brandon Budd five each, Brandon Burdick four, Good and Jesús Crawford three each and Nathan Cothren one. Souvenir recovered a Trojan fumble, and Blix sacked Arrington one time.
The Mules head to Onalaska this Friday to play the 2-2 Loggers who lost 46-0 last Friday to Morton/White Pass.
