Established as The Skamokawa Eagle in 1891

Writer prefers Howie’s background, experience

I’ve read the letters in The Eagle the last few weeks with interest. All have reiterated what a nice guy Mike Balch is. I don’t know anyone in the county that thinks otherwise. However, nice guys don’t necessarily make good sheriffs. What experience does he have managing people or an office? What experience does he have managing a large budget? What leadership skills does he demonstrate? What is the largest group of people that he has ever managed? He has 29 years of experience, but is that really 29 years of experience, or three years of experience repeated nine times? Mike Balch has only served on small departments in areas where major crime is not prevalent. As time progresses, unfortunately, more crime will move into Wahkiakum County. Do we want a sheriff who is learning as the problems present themselves or one who has been there and done that? I feel Mike is being backed by the “Good Old Boy System” of the past which apparently doesn’t want to see positive change in the department.

Mark Howie has progressively held positions of increasing responsibility and authority within a much larger law enforcement department before coming to Wahkiakum County. He has been commended by his past department for his actions and work. His credentials show he has the training and practical experience to lead and manage the sheriff’s department. He has experienced the influx of crime into an area. He can provide insight and leadership to prepare the sheriff’s department here for the crime that will come and make the department ready before it arrives. He has been the sheriff since Jon Dearmore’s death and done a good job. With the experience he brings to Wahkiakum County, the sheriff’s office can only improve. My vote is for proven management experience and leadership as we move into the future; my vote is for Mark Howie.
