Mule roll over Winlock, head to Adna this Friday

The Wahkiakum Mule varsity ran just 30 plays in rolling up a 41-0 Central League win over the visiting Winlock Cardinals last Friday.

The varsity took advantage of big plays and Cardinal mistakes to lead 34-0 at halftime. Winlock's second half kickoff went to Nathan Cothren, and he ran the ball back 75 yards for a touchdown, and Gunnar Blix's conversion kick made the score 41-0. At that point, Mule Coach Eric Hansen put in the junior varsity, and they finished the game.

Mason Mackey put the Mules on the scoreboard at 9:03 of the first quarter on a 10-yard run. Austin Good scored the next three touchdowns, the first, an 11-yard pass from Blix, the second, a 10-yard run, and the third, a 40-yard pass play. Mackey closed out the first half scoring on a one-yard plunge, and the second half opened with Cothren's 75 yard kickoff return.

Blix made three of five conversion kick attempts, and Mackey ran another.

The Mules gained 294 yards rushing on 21 rushes and 127 yards as Blix completed seven of nine passes, with three touchdowns, for a total of 421 yards on offense.

Winlock had minus-seven yards rushing in the first half, and Mule defenders intercepted two of four first half Cardinal pass attempts.

Cothren led the Mule ground attack with 59 yards on four runs. Good had 24, Blix 23, and Ryan Quigley 64. Leading tacklers were Jesús Crawford 11, Joey Moore seven, and all with six, Cothren, Trystan Mendez, and Hank Ferguson. Good and Mendez intercepted passes, and Brandon Burdick, Mendez, Alex Johnson and Zach Calvert recovered fumbles.

The Mules play at Adna this Friday, 7 p.m. The Pirates lost their season opening games to Morton/White Pass and Napavine, considered to be among the top teams in the state.
