Downhill Corral coming next week

The 5th Annual Cathlamet Downhill Corral will take place Friday, Saturday and Sunday next week.

Longboarders from around the world will converge for a variety of competition ranging from slaloms to races down Cathlamet's hill. Sponsors have put up $6,000 in prize money.

Streets will be closed during some of the events; sponsors will have openings for local traffic to pass.

Action starts at noon Friday with slalom races on 3rd Street near the Elochoman Slough Marina.

On Saturday, racers head to Puget Island for a push race at 9 a.m. This race starts at Stockhouse Farm, West Birnie Slough Road and makes a circuit along Ostervold, North Welcome Slough, School House and West Birnie to the finish.

They'll return to town in the afternoon for challenging Boarder Cross (Boarder X), in which racers careen down ramps and over jumps. This year, the race will have a new location: It will start near Wendt Elementary School and go down Spring and Columbia streets to finish near the old town hall. Practice runs start at 12 noon and the actual competition will start at 5 p.m.

The registration for this event will be capped at 64 racers. The course will be raced in 4 man heats.

The down hill race will occur Sunday morning. It is capped at 100 racers. Practice runs start at 9 a.m. and elimination heats at 11 a.m.

After the downhill, boarders will compete in the Slopestyle and Big Air contests on Broadway Street. These contests show style, board mastery and who can pull off the best jump off a ramp.

An award ceremony and concert at 8 p.m. will complete the day.
