WHS Mule golf coach is praised

To The Eagle:

There are individuals who have contributed their time, their energy, and their lives for students and athletes in our community. In particular, Nick Vavoudis, one of WHS’s golf coaches, has shown student athletes what hard work and dedication can accomplish in and beyond the classroom. As a former golf team member and pupil of Mr. Vavoudis, I wish to show my appreciation to the man that has positively influenced our community and specifically, our high school.

In the spring of 2009, in only its third year, the golf team gained Mr. Vavoudis as a coach. Before Nick arrived, the team’s practices consisted of impromptu drills at the local course, Skyline. But as an experienced and sensible golfer, Nick had something new to show them. He taught the tedious and technical skills of the sport, something the members of the team had lacked. Through booklets, videos, and a little help from the Golf channel, Nick made sure each member of the team had what they needed to improve their game. Four years later, his teachings, his care, and his dedication continue to inspire and propel the golf team to its current success including four district championships in five years under his and Bill Olsen’s leadership.

Nick Vavoudis has shown that a great coach engages himself in more than simply coaching the sport. Coaching requires being a leader and someone who provides an educational experience for the young and developing members of the team. Nick Vavoudis is such an individual: a coach, a leader, an educator, and a role model. During practices and during trips to away matches, he converses about life lessons, smart decision-making, and funny stories to keep the team engaged and entertained. He provides a learning environment and an opportunity for student athletes to employ themselves, on and off the golf course, as golfers and young adults.

After every conversation with Mr. Vavoudis I am reminded of the responsibility I have as a member of any community to pay forward his good deeds. Our community is lucky to have such an individual among us and involved in our high school’s athletic program. Although it would be impossible to express my full gratitude towards Mr. Vavoudis in such a short letter, I wish to thank him for contributing time, energy, and care for the betterment of the high school and the community.
