Caroline Iris Hedlund, 89, passed away in Placerville, California on June 8, 2013. Iris was born on March 16, 1924 in Liverpool, England to George and Catherine (Hines) Moore. She completed her education in England before marrying Roy Hedlund, whom she met during WWII. They were married in Liverpool in 1944.
At the end of the war, Iris traveled from England to the Cathlamet area to live with her husband Roy. Iris enjoyed her life in Cathlamet with her many very close friends and family. As hobbies, she enjoyed golf, bowling, tole painting, knitting, playing the piano, and was proficient in dances from many different cultures. Travel with her husband and her friends was always a welcome adventure. She was a devoted mother and a beloved grandmother.
Iris worked for Congresswoman Julia Butler Hansen for many years, and was later elected as the Wahkiakum County Assessor where she remained in office until her retirement from the County in 1988. She was a member of the St. James Episcopal Church and the Daughters of Britain.
Several years following Roy’s death in 2004, Iris moved to California to be near her children. She is survived by her son Jeffrey Hedlund and wife, Robin; her daughter Melanie Compagno and husband, Jim; grandchildren, James and Gianna Compagno, Zachary Hedlund, his mother and stepfather, Susan and Dale Darnell, and two great grandchildren, Gracie and Ella. In addition to Roy, Iris is preceded by her grandson, Shane Hedlund.
A visitation will be held on Friday at Dowling Funeral Home from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. with a Funeral service to follow at St. James Episcopal Church in Cathlamet at 2 p.m .; interment to follow at Greenwood Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made in Iris’ name to Cathlamet First Aid Division, P.O.Box 142 Cathlamet, WA 98612 or St. James Episcopal Church 1134 Columbia St. Cathlamet, WA 98612. Dowling Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
