The Wahkiakum Mule golf team had its best finish yet in the state Class 1/2B golf tournament last week with a fifth place finish.
Here's a report from Assistant Coach Nick Vavoudis:
Tuesday, day 1: After 18 holes at Oak Brook Country Club on May 21, only two of six Mules made the cut of the top 20 of 40 state qualifiers. Senior Brysen Coleman, the District 4 runner-up shot 85 tying for ninth place and junior Austin Good shot 89 tying for 16th.
Only four strokes separate four teams vying for third and fourth place trophies.
Not making the cut of a total 93 strokes were seniors Bubba Calvert 95, and Bradley Peek 100. Sophomore Elliot Haney shot 99 and junior Zach Calvert shot 102. Second round starts in the morning at 8:30 a.m.
Wednesday, day 2: With steady rain and 44 degree temperatures most of the final day qualifiers struggled, and the remaining pair of Mule golfers were not the exception. Coleman closed with a 93 for a two day total of 178, finishing 15th, the best score of all District 4 qualifiers. Austin Good shot 94 for a total 183 and 17th place.
The duo accumulated enough team points to propel the Mules to a fifth place finish in the 2013 State Championship.
DeSalles repeated as State Champs with 59.5 points, Liberty Christian second with 42, LaConner third with 22.5, and Bear Creek fourth 20 points. The Mules scored 10 team points. A bit of trivia, LaConner is the only public school that finished ahead of the Mules.
Thanks go to the Rodahl family for allowing the Mules to practice and play at Skyline Golf Course at no charge to the players or the school during the high school golf season.
