Mules, Comets headed to state

Local high school track and field athletes fared well at the district championships last Thursday at Raymond and advanced to the state meet this Friday and Saturday at Eastern Washington University, Cheney.

Naselle Comet Chandler Chapman won the high jump at 5'0"; he was the only local champion. He finished sixth in the triple jump and will compete in that event at state. Joining him at the state will be teammates Jake Condon, third in the pole vault at 12', and Katie Green, sixth in the 1600m, 5:37.36.

In other Comet results, Chapman finished eighth in the 400m, 57.95, and Levi Wasmundt was seventh in the 3200m, 10:56.12. Chad Andring was seventh in the shot put, 42'2".

For the Wahkiakum Mule girls, Rory Heywood placed third in the high jump, 4'8", and was a member of the fourth place 4x100m relay team with Tyra Elliott, Grace Peacock and Shelbie Abbot; they finished in 54.96. The same relay team placed seventh in the 4x200m relay in 1:58.56.

Elliott placed eighth in the 100m, 14.28 and sixth in the 400m, 1:07.6, she'll compete in the 400m at state. Heywood was seventh in the 800m, 2:47.223.

For the Wahkiakum Mules boys, Nathan Cothren finished third in the 200m, 23.85, and fifth in the 100m, 11.79. Lars Blix earned fourth place finishes in the shot put, 44'8", and discus, 128'6". Alex Johnson placed fifth in the 800m, 2:07.92, and sixth in the pole vault, 10'6". Thorben Hubner was sixth in the high jump, 5'6". All will compete in those events at state.
