Mule golfers win district title, compete in state tournament

The Wahkiakum Mule golf team headed to the state tournament this week, with two golfers advancing to the championship round on Wednesday.

After 18 holes at Oak Brook Country Club on Tuesday, May 21, only two of six Mules made the cut of the top 20 of 40 state qualifiers. Senior Brysen Coleman, the District 4 runner-up, shot 85 tying for ninth place and junior Austin Good shot 89 tying for 16th.

The two players will battle for team points on the final day. Only four total strokes separate four teams for the third and fourth place trophies.

Not making the cut of a total 93 strokes were seniors Bubba Calvert 95, and Bradley Peek 100. Sophomore Elliot Haney shot 99 and junior Zach Calvert shot 102.

The second round was played Wednesday morning as The Eagle went to press.

The Mules recaptured the District Title Trophy last Thursday, beating runner-up Willapa Valley by 52 strokes with a four man 36 hole total of 679 to 731.

The Mules qualified six players of the eight slot total allocated to District 4 to state. Brysen Coleman was edged out for medalist by Willapa Valley's Connor McCallister 166-167. Brook Calvert finished third 168 and Zach Calvert came from 11th the first day and outside the cut line to tie teammate Austin Good for fourth with a 172.

Also qualifying for state and finishing sixth and seventh were Elliot Haney 173 and Bradley Peek 176.

The 2013 Mules set another milestone by qualifying six players for state for the first time in school history.

The Mules play in the state tournament May 21 and 22.
