The 2013 Wahkiakum Mule golf team last Thursday finished their inter-league match season with a 173-208 win over Three Rivers Christian, moving their record to 24-1 with their lone blemish being a loss at Willapa Valley.
The two titans--each with just one loss--will clash Tuesday and Wednesday at the District 4 Championship Tournament in Cosmopolis. The Mules are trying to reclaim the trophy that they have won four out of a possible six times since Wahkiakum started the golf program.
Leading the Mules last Thursday was medalist junior Austin Good who shot 41. Tying for second were senior Bradley Peek and junior Zach Calvert, each scoring 42; Zach's score could not count in the team score because he was playing in the six spot. Sophomore Elliot Haney tied senior Brook Calvert at 45. Also playing for the Mules were seniors Brysen Coleman 51 and Eli McElroy 57.
District 4's state qualifier allocation has been lowered from 18 players in 2012 to 8 players this year due to the WIAA's decision to lower the number of district qualifiers from 80 to 40 players statewide. The Mules sent five players in 2012, the most in school history, and with all players returning they hope to send at least that many this year. Each high school can send six players to District and then to State if they qualify.
After one round of golf at district on Tuesday, the Mules lead Willapa Valley by 20 strokes 333-354. The Mules occupy five of the top eight coveted spots that qualify for state. Brysen Coleman is in first shooting 81, Bubba Calvert second 82 and Elliot Haney third with 83. In 6th Austin Good 87 and 8th is Bradley Peek 88. In 11th place is Zach Calvert. The final round of district was played yesterday (Wednesday) morning.
The state meet will be May 21 and 22 at Oakbrook Golf Course, Lakewood.
