Mules split doubleheader with North Beach

The Wahkiakum Mule softball team finished their regular season on Friday at home against North Beach in a double header. They split the games losing the first game 16-11 and winning the second 18-6.

Tori Wegdahl started the first game on the mound, with Baylee Olsen stepping in as relief. Shanna Havens and Marissa Washington were 2-4 at the plate, an ailing Haylee Budd was 2-3. Morgan Elliot was 2-4, with a sacrifice bunt getting a lead off single. Wegdahl hit two triples.

“Marissa Longtain played out of her mind, she just cremated the ball,” said Coach Cindy Fudge. Longtain went 5-5 with two singles, two doubles and a triple, bringing in five RBIs.

“We started out slow and weren’t quite able to catch up to North Beach in the first game, but I was really happy with our hitting and base running. Knowing that North Beach is in first place in the Pacific League and that we competed well with them was a great boost for this hard working team,” said Fudge.

Dallas Gott was the starting pitcher in the second game, with Olsen once again providing relief.

In the third inning Sam Boyce started a hitting extravaganza. She got on base, and Budd and Wegdahl followed right behind with singles of their own. With the bases loaded, Longtain hit a long ball, bringing them all in.

Boyce went 3-4 with two singles and a triple, Wegdahl went 3-4 with two singles and a double. Longtain went 2-3 and a walk. Rachel Patching, Madison LaBerge and Olsen also contributed with singles of their own.

Defensively, “Sami Boyce was amazing behind the plate for both games," Fudge commented. "She really worked her tail off for the team…Tori Wegdahl at shortstop really gave it her all and Marissa Longtain [was] the vacuum at third. This was a great way to end the season.”

“My seniors did a great job all the way around. I couldn’t have had better leaders this season. These four seniors lead by example during a tough season. They really showed that success isn’t always on the scoreboard, that true success is doing your best, helping others to do their best and giving all you have as a teammate. Haylee Budd, Marissa Washington, Shanna Havens and Rachel Patching, it has been an honor to have the privilege of coaching you. Good luck in all life has for you. In my book you are champions in what really matters, the game of life,” Fudge said.
