Board sets calendar, acts on other business

The Wahkiakum School District Board of Directors approved a calendar for the 2013-14 school year and acted on other business when it met April 23.

School will start September 3 and end June 13.

Superintendent Bob Garrett said the Washington Interscholastic Athletic Association has scheduled school sports to start a week later next year, basically one week before Labor Day weekend. Spring break will be April 7-11, 2014.

The board accepted the resignation of Kevin Patching as middle school football coach. Patching is working outside the community and said he would be unable to attend practices.

Wahkiakum High School Principal Stephanie Leitz announced that Paris Cothren and Dylan Hansen received Masonic Junior Achievement Awards last week in recognition of their activities and service in the high school.

Garrett said only one person has shown interest in filling the vacancy created when Tony Boyce resigned from the board of directors, and that person is still considering whether or not to apply. The position will be on the fall election ballot to fill Boyce's unexpired term.

Boyce represented Director District 1, which included portions of the Rosedale, Columbia and North and South Cathlamet precincts.

Positions held by Lee Tischer, Mike Quigley and Michelle Budd will also be on the fall election ballots. Tischer said he has won’t seek another term.
