Established as The Skamokawa Eagle in 1891
Representatives of the Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce rose before dawn last Friday to register competitors at the Marina for the first Hook the Hawg salmon derby. One hundred people signed up that day to take part in the newest event conceived by the Chamber. Ten more people registered on Saturday. Ages ranged from nine to 88 years of age, and women were represented as well. A good number of the registrants were locals, but others arrived from all over the state and Oregon.
According to Chamber Executive Director Lynda Gerlach, the organization plans to create two new events this year. With the cancellation of this year’s annual sturgeon derby, the Chamber saw an opening for a similar event with less current restrictions.
Gerlach commended recent hire, Ashley Moore, for her quick and thorough action in putting the successful event together. She also praised Port Manager Jackie Lea and Assistant Port Manager, Abe York. “Without their support, this wouldn’t happen,” she said.
Winners were able to select between cash prizes and handmade rods by local Bud Mickelsen.
