What's happening at the fair?

The volunteer positions for the Wahkiakum County Fair Board have been filled! We welcome to the board Kathy Durrah and Jason Rainey. We have a full board again and lots of fundraising to do this year! In February we host a Valentine Dinner, March is Easter Bingo time and for April I am preparing the paper work to schedule a Centered Riding Clinic. All these fundraising ideas provide opportunities for our community to meet and enjoy some quality time with friends and family. Hope you will plan on attending all our fundraising events as we continue to improve our Fair and Fairgrounds with the proceeds.

We need Fair theme entries! The “2013 Fair Theme Contest” is underway and going to end soon! Keep sending your ideas to E-mail: wahkiakumfair@centurytel.net or Address: Wahkiakum County Fair, P.O.Box 1, Skamokawa, Wa 98647. The Fair Board will select the theme and the winner will be announced in this column. If your theme is picked you will be notified and awarded two bright colored Fair t-shirts and two Fair passes.

Have you noticed our Valentine Diamond Dinner signs? Thanks to Kay Chamberlain there are colorful handmade signs posted all over our County. We hope they will attract your attention and make you decide to get on over to the Bank of the Pacific to purchase your tickets. You don’t want to miss this special dinner!

We will be welcoming a new County Commissioner to our Fair Board meetings each month. Commissioner Mike Backman will be our Fair Commissioner with Dan Cothren as back-up, if Mike has to miss a meeting. We would like to thank Commissioner Blair Brady for the many years he has attended our meetings as our Fair Commissioner and for the good advice he always added to our discussions. Blair is still involved in our Fundraising activities, he’s one of the Valentine Diamond Dinner BBQ cooks and recently purchased some big banners to help advertise the Valentine Dinner. These banners are hanging up on the Bank of the Pacific fence and the Cathlamet Building Materials fence. Blair designed the banners and I think he did a great job.

If you would like to attend the Valentine Diamond Dinner but would like a “vegetarian” meal, buy your tickets! We also serve Portabella mushrooms cooked on the barbeque. Bill Coons sprinkles his secret spices over them and they are so delicious! At the dinner just let your waitress know you would like the Portabella Mushrooms instead of the filet mignon steak and you will be served a wonderful vegetarian dinner.

Support the 2013 Wahkiakum County Fair by purchasing tickets to the “Valentine Diamond Dinner” held at the Skamokawa Grange on February 9th. Tickets are still only $25 per dinner and the price includes a raffle ticket to win a diamond bracelet! The bracelet is beautifully crafted with sparkling diamonds. This same raffle has multiple other prizes that you can win too. Purchase more raffle tickets for $1 each during the dinner to increase your chances of taking a nice prize home. Purchase your dinner tickets at the Cathlamet Bank of the Pacific or call Becky at 795-3434/560-0371 for out of town purchases. Dinner includes a filet mignon steak cooked on the BBQ to perfection, baked potato with all the fixings, Kay’s special Green beans, a beautiful multi-lettuce salad, a fresh baked roll, dessert, a glass of wine or your choice of other beverages available. All proceeds from Wahkiakum County Fair Board fundraising events will go directly toward supporting and maintaining your 2013 Wahkiakum County Fair.

The fair office is open by appointment only. If you need to gain access to the fairgrounds contact Fair Manager Becky Ledtke @ 795-3480 and leave a message.

The next Wahkiakum County Fair Board meeting is February 13th, 7:00 p.m., PUD Building Meeting Room in Cathlamet. The public is always welcome to attend.
