Student poems published

Poems of three students at Julius A. Wendt Elementary School have been published in a book, "Talented: 2012 Poetry Collection," published last fall by the America Library of Poetry.

The students are Ellie Leitz, McKensi Fluckiger and Charlie Ashe. They wrote the poems as fifth graders; they are now in the sixth grade.

Here are the poems:

The Color Orange by Charlie Ashe

The color that the hunters wear while looking

for the right bull.

The color of that juicy fruit that everyone loves

on a hot summer's day.

The color of the sunset on the ocean floor.

And at the bottom of that ocean lives a bright

orange clown fish.

The color of the jack-o-lantern on a little boy's

porch on the night of.

Underneath that fall tree there were thousands

of orange leaves.

Raindrop by Mckensi Fluckiger

A drop of rain is like a sudden knock on the door.

Unexpected, yet often welcomed with a nice smile.

It can brighten your day or ruin your plans.

It can make you laugh, or it can make you cry.

Whether the raindrop is moving slow or fast,

Or if it's small or big, it can always get anyone's

attention.

A raindrop contains many special secrets.

It's a bubble of anticipation and surprise.

It cleanses the Earth; it feeds the flowers and fills

the holes.

The raindrop is never silent.

It bangs on the roof, spatters on the window,

or splashes in a puddle.

It can't make you shallow.

It's certainly just a raindrop.

King for the Court by Ellie Leitz

Prepare to pass the ball

Dribble through the defense

Swat before a swish

Foul on a far shot

free throw line

or not?

Archive center hosting old-time loggers' reunion

The Appelo Archives Center will host the third annual Old Time Loggers Reunion on January 26 from 12 noon to 4 p.m. It will be held at the Center at 1056 State Route 4 in Naselle.

The event is intended to bring together loggers and timber workers, as well as any and all who have worked in the industry. Their families and all in the area who want to honor the industry's importance to the past and present are most welcome.

Both Howard Laney and Johnny Berguist will be honored at this year's event. Each has a long history of working in the woods, said archive center manager Karen Bertoch, so it is with great pride that the archives center's board honors them at this event. They have both meant a great deal to the community and the industry so all are invited to come wish them well and share stories with them.

Refreshments will be provided, and the center's new cafe will be open. All activities will be held in the lower level with the logging displays downstairs as well.
