Established as The Skamokawa Eagle in 1891

What's happening at the Fair?

We have in our approved Wahkiakum County Fair budget for 2013, $13,500 to pay out to adult and youth exhibitors. Adults will be receiving the same dollar per point as youth exhibitors again. The premium point payment has been reinstated in our budget for Adults, spread the word!

With the above good news circulating around our community, a question was asked; “How about purchasing ribbons for the adult exhibitors instead of using stickers?” To buy these ribbons we will need to ask for donations from our community, as we didn’t plan the extra cost of these ribbons into our 2013 budget. If you would like to donate a few dollars to help purchase ribbons for our Adult exhibitors this year, please send your donations to: Wahkiakum County Fair, P.O.Box 1, Skamokawa, Wa 98647 and indicate on your check “ribbons.”

The Valentine Diamond Dinner Committee met last Friday. We discussed our dinner menu, raffle prizes, decorations, advertising and volunteers needed. Posters to advertise the dinner will be handmade by Kay Chamberlain this year. Be sure to read over these special made posters to get dinner and ticket information.

On January 1st I put a new lock on the horse gate. If you would like to use the arena in 2013 it’s time to purchase a new key. Call Becky at 360-560-0371/795-3480, leave your name, phone number, message and we can meet at the fairgrounds and complete the paperwork.

The drainage project by the horse barn and arena is almost completed. Bill Chamberlain and Ed Stevens installed the catch basins, filled the ditch with some sand and then rock. To get the proper slope to the underground pipe the catch basins had to be set in the ground at a certain depth. To bring the slope of the road back up to the correct height, a box to set on top of each catch basin was fabricated. Each box was precisely measured and welded by Jon Gustafson for a perfect fit. Thank-you Bill, Ed and Jon for the many hours you have worked on this project! We need a few days of dry weather, a little more rock and the project will be done!

Less than a month until the Valentine Diamond Dinner! You can support the 2013 Wahkiakum County Fair by purchasing tickets to the “Valentine Diamond Dinner” held at the Skamokawa Grange on February 9th. Tickets are still only $25 per dinner and the price includes a raffle ticket to win a basket of goodies including a diamond bracelet and a bottle of champagne! You can purchase more raffle tickets for $1 each during the dinner to increase your chances of taking this basket of goodies home. Purchase your dinner tickets at the Cathlamet Bank of the Pacific or call Becky at 795-3434 or 560-0371 for out of town purchases. Dinner includes a filet mignon steak cooked on the BBQ to perfection, baked potato with all the fixings, a beautiful multi-lettuce salad, Kay’s special green beans, a fresh baked roll, dessert, a glass of wine or your choice of beverage. All proceeds from Wahkiakum County Fair Board fundraising events go directly toward supporting and maintaining your 2013 Wahkiakum County Fair.

If you would like to attend the Valentine Diamond Dinner but are a vegetarian we also serve portobello mushrooms cooked on the barbeque and vegetarian green beans. At the dinner just let your waitress know you would like the portobello mushrooms instead of the filet mignon steak and you will be served a wonderful vegetarian dinner.

If you need to gain access to the fairgrounds contact Fair Manager Becky Ledtke @ 795-3480 or 560-0371 and leave a message.
